In a high-octane semi-final at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, New Zealand clinched a 50-run victory over South Africa, securing their place in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final against India on March 9 at the Dubai International Stadium.
Opting to bat first, New Zealand’s innings was anchored by stellar centuries from Rachin Ravindra and Kane Williamson. The duo forged a commanding 164-run partnership for the second wicket, laying a solid foundation for a formidable total.
Ravindra’s aggressive 108 off 101 balls, laced with 13 boundaries and a six, showcased his penchant for delivering in ICC events, marking his fifth ODI century in such tournaments. Williamson’s composed 102 off 94 balls, featuring 10 fours and two sixes, further bolstered New Zealand’s innings.
The Black Caps capitalised on this platform, amassing 111 runs in the final 10 overs to post a daunting 362/6 in their allotted 50 overs.
In response, South Africa’s chase began on a cautious note. Captain Temba Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen steadied the innings after an early setback, with Bavuma contributing a patient 56 off 71 balls and van der Dussen adding a half-century. Their 105-run partnership seemed to set the stage for a competitive chase.
However, New Zealand’s captain and left-arm spinner, Mitchell Santner, orchestrated a pivotal middle-order collapse. He dismissed both Bavuma and van der Dussen in quick succession and then accounted for the dangerous Heinrich Klaasen, who managed only three runs. This triple strike derailed South Africa’s momentum, leaving them struggling at a crucial juncture.
Amid the tumbling wickets, David Miller emerged as a beacon of resistance for the Proteas. Displaying his characteristic flair, Miller unleashed a counter-attacking innings, racing to a century off just 67 balls. His aggressive approach reignited hopes of an improbable chase. However, with minimal support from the other end, South Africa’s innings eventually concluded at 312/9, falling short of the target.
This victory propels New Zealand into the Champions Trophy final, where they will face India, who triumphed over Australia in the other semi-final. The summit clash, scheduled for March 9 in Dubai.
