Assam Police will arrest 2,000 to 3,000 more men in the next ten days as part of its campaign against child marriage, said Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The Assam Crime Investigation Department has arrested nine people, including an IPS officer and five other policemen, in response to allegations by a Muslim businessman that they were trying to extort money from him, threatening him with a staged "encounter," and justifying his killing by accusing him of terrorism.

The Assam Police on Friday shot dead a Muslim youth who is an accused of murder. The police claimed that they killed him after he allegedly tried to escape during investigation.

Christians in Assam have decided not to cooperate with the state police, who began a survey aiming to gather details of Christians, their churches, institutions, and religious conversions.

Hours after Six people including five Meghalaya villagers were killed and several others injured in Assam Police’s open firing on the Assam-Meghalaya boundary early on November 22, senior Trinamool Congress leader and former Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma terms the incident as “genocide.”

Six persons died on Tuesday in Mukroh village of Meghalaya’s West Jaintia Hills district after the Assam Police opened fire at them. Five of those killed are residents of Meghalaya, while one is an official of the Assam Forest Guard.
