While opposing the bail pleas of anti-CAA activists in the Delhi violence larger conspiracy case, the Additional Solicitor General (ASG) labelled them “anti-nationals donning the facade of intellectuals,” claiming that every time their bail is heard, “The New York Times writes something and social media rushes to defend them without realising who they are.”
The Delhi Police on Tuesday told the Supreme Court that anti-CAA activist Umar Khalid cannot claim parity with Devangana Kalita, Natasha Narwal, and Asif Iqbal Tanha, co-accused who secured bail in 2021, because the Delhi High Court order granting them bail was based on an incorrect interpretation of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
In an exchange that underscored the prolonged incarceration of anti-CAA activists, the Supreme Court on Monday questioned the Delhi Police over the continuing delay in the bail pleas of those accused in the Delhi pogrom larger conspiracy case.
The march, held on the day marking Umar Khalid’s five years in jail, began at Ganga Dhaba and concluded at Sabarmati Dhaba, and was attended by the families of the jailed activists- from the young daughter of Tasleem Khan to the elderly parents of Gulfisha Fatima and Shadab Khan.
