The Union government on Saturday reduced the Central excise duty on petrol by Rs 8 per litre and that on diesel by Rs 6 per litre.
Opposition members staged protests over the hike in prices of petroleum products and essential commodities in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on Monday.
Fuel prices were hiked again on Saturday for the tenth time in 12 days. Since March 22, petrol and diesel rates have increased by Rs 7.20 per litre.
Petrol price on Tuesday was hiked by 80 paise a litre and diesel by 70 paise, taking the total increase in rates in the last one week to ₹4.80 per litre.
Petrol and diesel prices were increased again on Sunday, the fifth such hike in six days.
