Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has alleged that the Election Commission in India was “compromised,” saying that there was “something very wrong with the system.”
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Monday accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) of facilitating voter fraud in West Bengal ahead of the upcoming elections.
During the meeting of the committee to select the next Election Commissioner, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi presented a dissent note, stating, “The most fundamental aspect of an independent Election Commission free from executive interference is the process of choosing the Election Commissioner and Chief Election Commissioner.”
The opposition Congress, represented on the selection panel by Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, objected to what it described as a rushed decision to name the new CEC.
Opposition leaders, including Congress’ Rahul Gandhi, NCP (SP)’s Supriya Sule, and Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Sanjay Raut, on Friday doubled down on their charges of “wrongdoing” during last year’s Maharashtra elections and said that the opposition has found several anomalies in the voter list.
