An Army court has recommended life imprisonment for a captain involved in the staged killings of three Kashmiri men at Amshipora in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district in 2020.
Since May 2021, soon after BJP’s Himanta Biswa Sarma took over as chief minister of Assam, 161 incidents of police action took place across Assam resulting in the death of 51 people and injuries to 139 others, informed Gauhati High Court.
Regarding the deaths of the four accused in the rape and murder of a veterinarian in Hyderabad in 2019, the Supreme Court-appointed inquiry commission has refuted the claims of the Hyderabad police and concluded that the four accused were "deliberately fired upon by the police with an intent to cause their death."
The Gauhati High Court on Monday directed the Assam government to present case details of all "alleged" encounter killings since the Bharatiya Janata Party came to power in May. The court was hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) plea moved before it seeking an independent probe into the alleged fake encounters of the Assam Police.
Since May this year, soon after BJP's Himanta Biswa Sarma took over as chief minister of Assam, at least 31 men have been killed while in police custody or in alleged shootouts with the police.
Civil society organisations who have studied 17 cases of extrajudicial killings in Uttar Pradesh, which took place between March 2017 and March 2018 and led to 18 people’s deaths, found that in not one case has an FIR been registered against the police officers who were involved in the killing.
