Hamas has called the situation in Gaza a “catastrophic famine” as land crossings continue to be blocked by Israeli occupation despite international calls for the most effective routes to be reopened.
The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), a global hunger monitoring system, has warned that the “worst-case scenario of famine” is now unfolding in Gaza.
The World Food Program (WFP) warned that Gaza's hunger crisis has reached alarming levels, with nearly one in three people going without food for days and over 90,000 women and children in urgent need of treatment for malnutrition.
At least 19 Palestinians in Gaza died of hunger on Sunday, health authorities reported, warning that hundreds more – their bodies wasted away by months of starvation – are on the brink of imminent death.
“My heart was breaking but I couldn’t do anything given the lack of resources and harsh conditions. On May 3, my daughter died of hunger. Saying goodbye to her was an indescribable pain, and everything she endured continues to torment me every moment of my life,” al-Iskafi said.
