The Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC), an advocacy group committed to safeguarding India’s pluralist and tolerant ethos today welcomed the release from prison of Dr. Kafeel Khan, a whistleblower Indian Muslim doctor who has been repeatedly imprisoned by the government in Uttar Pradesh state on false criminal charges. IAMC also welcomes the release of Pinjra Tod activist Devangana Kalita (Kalita remains in jail for the fourth case. She got bail in the third case) and former Aligarh Muslim University student leaders Sharjeel Usmani and Farhan Zuberi.

"It is my birthday today, and there could have been no better gift for me than this. I am speechless with joy, and will never be able to forget this day. Thank you for letting me believe that wrong cannot triumph over those who have avoided doing wrong at all costs," Dr. Shabista Khan said hours after the Allahabad High Court ordered her husband Dr. Kafeel Khan's immediate release and the dropping of stringent National Security Act (NSA) charges against him which was invoked earlier this year over an alleged speech by him against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Shabista Khan, wife of Dr. Kafeel has penned a letter to a Forum for Doctors and Medical Professionals asking them to stand by her husband and sharing her anguish at Dr. Kafeel's prolonged captivity.

The arrest of Dr.Kafeel Khan on charges of National Security Act has attracted criticism.

According to the FIR, Kafeel said in his speech: “Mota Bhai’ is teaching everyone to become Hindu or Muslim but not a human being. He does not believe in the constitution since the RSS came into existence. The CAA makes Muslims a second category citizen and subsequently they will be harassed with the implementation of the NRC.”
