The Congress on Sunday accused the BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government of ordering a “brutal lathi-charge” on National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) protesters who were taking out a peaceful march in Varanasi as part of the party’s nationwide ‘MGNREGA Bachao Sangram’ campaign.
The Union government is expected to table the Viksit Bharat, Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Bill, 2025, which seeks to replace the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), 2005, a landmark rights-based employment law introduced by the Congress-led UPA government.
Nearly 27 lakh workers’ names were deleted from the MGNREGA database between October 10 and November 14, a figure that far exceeds the 10.5 lakh additions recorded during the same period, which congress Leader Jairam Ramesh called an “attempt to deny India’s rural poor their legislative right to employment.”
Millions of workers will be deprived of a basic income as the Congress claims that the Union government's mandatory implementation of an Aadhaar-based payment system for workers under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) will hinder their earnings.
