‘I quit wrestling!’: Olympics medallist Sakshi Malik announces retirement after Sanjay Singh’s WFI chief elections win

2016 Rio Olympics bronze medallist and India’s wrestling icon Sakshi Malik has announced quitting wrestling following Sanjay Singh being elected as president of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).

Olympian Sakshi Malik who is one of the front figures of wrestlers’ protest, said that one of the seven female wrestlers, who is a minor, has altered her statement against Wrestling Federation of India and BJP MP, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh due to pressure.

India’s world-class wrestlers Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia were detained along with other protesters after a scuffle broke out between protestors and police at Jantar Mantar today, ahead of the protesting wrestlers’ ‘Mahila Samman Mahapanchayat’ at the new Parliament House building today.

“I had faced a lot of difficulties when I was nothing”- Sakshi Malik.

At the 2016 Summer Olympics, she won the bronze medal in the same category, becoming the first Indian female wrestler to win a medal at the Olympics.
