A Delhi court on Saturday denied bail to Muslim activist and JNU research scholar Sharjeel Imam in connection with the 2020 Delhi pogrom case involving allegations of sedition, noting that “although the applicant did not ask anybody to pick weapons and kill the people but his speeches and activities mobilised the public which disrupted the city and might be the main reason in outbreak of the riots.”

Karnataka High Court has quashed Sedition case against Shaheen School international in Bidar. The case was filed by then BJP government alleging that a play staged by class 4, 5 and 6 students against CAA in 2020 was communal in nature and had slogans against PM Narendra Modi.

The Delhi High Court on Friday asked Delhi Police to respond to jailed Muslim activist Sharjeel Imam’s plea seeking the dismissal of a supplementary chargesheet that introduced charges of sedition and ‘hate speech’ in a case related to his anti-CAA speech delivered at Jamia Millia Islamia in December 2019.

The Law Commission of India has recommended against the total repeal of Sedition law (Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code) and has instead proposed that the provision be retained with certain amendments.

The Kerala High Court on Wednesday temporarily stayed the sedition proceedings stemming from the First Information Report (FIR) registered against filmmaker Aisha Sultana in 2021 by the Lakshadweep Police.
