The world has just experienced the hottest January ever recorded, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said on 6 February, citing data crunched by UN partner the Copernicus Climate Service.
A recent report by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has revealed that India experienced extreme weather events on 93% of the days in the first nine months of 2024. This relentless frequency led to over 3,000 fatalities and the destruction of more than 200,000 homes across the country.
India saw the driest August since 1901 when the country began keeping weather records, but the monsoon is expected to make a recovery from the first week of September, said the weather office.
Extreme weather events claimed at least 233 lives and damaged 0.95 million hectare of cropland in India in between 2023 January and 2023 April, said Centre for Science and Environment (CSE).
