A year like a decade of punishment: GN Saibaba’s wife Vasantha

When the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court acquitted former Delhi University Professor G N Saibaba and five others in October 2022, Vasantha Kumari didn’t leave for Maharashtra expecting to receive her partner.

She knew the government will not go easy on the 90% differently abled wheelchair-bound Saibaba and others who were arrested for links with the Maoist movement.

Her prediction came true. Less than 24 hours later, the Supreme Court stayed the order. His plea for house arrest on medical grounds was also denied.

Saibaba, a vocal critic of the repression against tribals in India, completes eight years of incarceration. Vasantha tells Maktoob about his case and the human rights violations against him.
