Rohith Vemula: Protest gathers support across the globe

Protest and condolence meeting demanding justice for Rohith Vemula, the martyred Dalit scholar-activist from Hyderabad Central University has gone global with more foreign renowned universities joining the protest each day. The outrage across India against the ‘Institutional murder’ of Rohith Vemula on January 17 gained widespread attention abroad through social Medias like face book and twitter.

Scholars and activists from the ‘Decoloniality Summer School at UNISA in Pretoria, South Africa stood in solidarity with Rohith Vemula, holding placards which say ‘To Debrahmanize is to Decolonize’, Decolonization is Debrahmanization.’ The faculty and students of the University of Pennsylvania held a condolence meeting and solidarity event in January 23rd. Prof.Ramanaryanan Rawat, Dalit studies scholar headed the discussion followed by a screening of the documentary ‘Death of Merit’. The students then lit candles for Rohith and put up posters on the library board. Candle light vigil and peaceful protest were held at University of Michigan, United States too. Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University, Cambridge also held discussions on the alleged case of discrimination against the Dalits and backward classes in India in the light of Rohith’s suicide. Farid Esack, a South African scholar, writer and political activist, Professor at the University of Johannesburg posted in face book ‘ I am Rohith Vemula!  , Phansi Casteism! Phansi,   Death to Brahmanism everywhere! , Long live the spirit of Rohith Vemula!’.     Protest held at Indian Consulate, San Francisco and handed over the letter to Indian Council General, demanding justice.  Students of Australia also conducted a protest eve with the placards which says ‘We stand Modi’s agenda of Ate and Greed’.
