Canada’s Liberal Party wins election, Mark Carney on course to form next government, projections show

Mark Carney’s Liberal Party has won the Canadian election and will form the next government, public broadcaster CBC projects.

National broadcasters CBC and CTV News reported late Monday that Carney, 60, will keep the top job after projections showed his Liberals on course to win the most seats in the 343-member House of Commons.

It was not clear if Carney would be able to form a majority government or need to rely on the support of a smaller party. The Liberals, who have secured a fourth consecutive term in power, last won a parliamentary majority in 2015.

With the votes still being counted late on Monday, the Liberals were on course to win at least 160 seats, with the Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilievre, 45, on track to take at least 151, according to CBC projections.

There are 343 federal ridings across the country and each has a corresponding seat in Parliament – parties need 172 seats or more to secure a majority.

How to respond to Trump was the defining issue of the campaign, and Carney, a former Bank of England governor, capitalised on widespread anger at the US president’s trade policy and threats
