The World Health Organization (WHO) chief has warned governments against “vaccine nationalism” on Thursday and urged world leaders to make plans now on how to share life-saving inoculations against novel coronavirus.
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was speaking in an online panel discussion with members of the Aspen Security Forum in the United States moderated by the NBC network.
“There should be a global consensus to make a vaccine, any product, a global public product,” Ghebreyesus said.
“And this is a political choice, a political commitment. And we want political leaders to decide on this. Vaccine nationalism is not good. It will not help us.” UN’s health agency chief said.
Economic recovery around the world could come faster if any coronavirus vaccine is made available to all as a public good, Ghebreyesus added.
More than 18.8 million people around the world have been diagnosed with the new coronavirus, while the global death toll surpassed 708,500 people. More than 11.2 million have recovered.
