Global coronavirus deaths near 1.1million

The COVID-19 global death toll is nearing 1.1 million – it is likely to pass this milestone within the next 24 hours.

The current figure on the Johns Hopkins University tracker is 1,096,833, and more than 5,000 new deaths are being reported daily worldwide.

For the first time since late July, the tally of coronavirus cases in the United States surpassed 64,000 on Thursday.

More than 7,944,000 cases have been reported nationwide since February, and at least 216,000 people in the United States have died.

India on Thursday registered a spike of 63,371 cases, taking the total count to 7,370,468, and the death toll reached 112,144.

Giving a big blow to the hope that the drug from US-based Gilead Sciences raised in combating the pandemic, a World Health Organisation (WHO) study said that anti-viral drug remdesivir has little or no effect in the recovery and mortality of hospitalised Covid-19 patients.
