Israel cuts off 70% of Gaza’s water supply

The Israeli occupation forces have disrupted the water supply from the Israeli company Mekorot to the Gaza Strip, severing approximately 70 percent of the total water resources available to the besieged Palestinian enclave.

Hosni Mehanna, a spokesperson for the Gaza municipality, said that the cutoff impacts the primary pipeline situated in the Shujayea neighborhood of eastern Gaza City, reported Al Jazeera.

This area has been under a sustained military offensive by Israeli occupation forces since Thursday.

“The cause of this disruption is still uncertain, though we are working alongside international bodies to determine if the pipeline sustained damage from the intense Israeli bombardment in the vicinity,” Mehanna stated.

He suggested that the interruption could stem either from direct combat operations or a calculated decision by Israeli officials.

Data from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), published in March 2025, notes that Gaza’s water infrastructure has been repeatedly targeted during escalations, exacerbating an already strained system.

“Whatever the reason, the outcome is catastrophic,” Mehanna added. “Without the prompt resumption of water from Mekorot, Gaza is on the brink of a severe water emergency.”

The Gaza Strip, long plagued by a persistent lack of potable water, deteriorating infrastructure, and polluted groundwater, now faces heightened threats of widespread thirst, dehydration, and disease outbreaks, compounding an already dire humanitarian situation.
