Liverpool’s Portugal winger Diogo Jota dies in car accident

Liverpool Football Club player and Portugal national team forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre tragically lost their life in a car accident in Spain on Thursday morning. “The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre,” Liverpool said in a statement.

“Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.”

“We have lost two champions. Their deaths represent irreparable losses for Portuguese football, and we will do everything we can to honour their legacy every day,” the Portuguese Football Federation said in a statement.

The tragic incident occurred at a place near Zomara in northwestern Spain. Spain’s national daily tabloid sport newspaper MARCA reported that the fatal crash occurred in the early hours of Thursday, with the Portuguese international breathing his last on the spot.

The Portuguese winger began his career with Pacos de Ferreira’s youth setup before moving to Atlético Madrid in 2016. He later joined Wolverhampton before moving to the Premier League giants Liverpool in 2020.

Jota was exceptional in front of the net, scoring 65 goals for ‘the Reds’ since moving to the club. The winger was instrumental in Liverpool’s recent successful journey, including the Premier League title, the FA Cup, and the English League Cup

The player has appeared 49 times for the national side, scoring 14 goals. Jota married his long-term partner, Rute Cardoso, last month.

The tragic and unexpected loss of the Portuguese international induced shockwaves throughout the footballing world and beyond, leaving fans and the broader sporting community in mourning.
