Pulitzer winner Indian photojournalist Danish Siddiqui killed in Afghanistan

Danish Siddiqui, an award winning Reuters photojournalist, was killed in clashes in Spin Boldak district in Afghanistan’s Kandahar, reported TOLOnews, an Afghanistan’s first 24/7 news channel.

The Indian journalist was covering the situation in Kandahar over the last few days.

The Indian embassy in Afghanistan also confirmed the news of Siddiqui’s death.

“Deeply disturbed by the sad news of the killing of a friend, Danish Seddiqi in Kandahar last night. The Indian Journalist & winner of Pulitzer Prize was embedded with Afghan security forces. I met him 2 weeks ago before his departure to Kabul. Condolences to his family & Reuters,” Farid Mamundzay, Afghanistan’s Ambassador to India tweeted.

Siddiqui’s latest report from Kandahar was published just three days ago, where he described how the forces he was embedded with had come under attack from the Taliban.

Siddiqui, photojournalist headed Reuters’ multimedia team in India, won the Pulitzer Prize in 2018, for his work on the Rohingya refugee crisis along with others on his team.

A Reuters photographer since 2010, Siddiqui’s work spanned covering the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the Rohingya refugees crisis, the Hong Kong protests, Nepal earthquakes, Hindu mob killings of Muslims in India and mismanagement of second wave of COVID-19 in India.

Danish Siddiqui graduated with a degree in Economics from Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi. He had a degree in Mass Communication from the AJK Mass Communication Research Centre at Jamia in 2007.
