Turkey-Syria earthquake: 1,600 dead; 2nd major quake hits

At least 1,014 deaths were reported in Turkey, while 592 people died in Syria as a magnitude 7.5 earthquake follows devastating 7.8 earthquake in southeast Turkey, also causing damage in northern Syria.

A new earthquake of at least magnitude 7.5 has been reported in southeast Turkey by Turkey’s AFAD emergency authority and the United States Geological Service (USGS).

At least 592 people were killed in Syria as buildings collapsed after a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck neighbouring Türkiye before dawn on Monday, state media and rescuers said.

The quake killed at least 371 people and left at least another 1,089 injured in regime-controlled parts of Syria, including the cities of Aleppo, Hama, Latakia and Tartus, the official news agency SANA reported, citing the health ministry.

Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) reported that the death toll from the 7.7 magnitude quake that struck the country’s southern region early on Monday has risen to 1,014.

Turkish President Erdogan has said 5,383 people have been wounded, adding he could not predict how high the casualty numbers would rise.

Russia said it is readying rescue teams to fly to Türkiye to help earthquake victims there and in neighbouring Syria.

A minister of emergency situations, Aleksandr Kurenkov, said teams of 100 search and rescue personnel are on standby to be sent to Türkiye with two Il-76 transport planes.

China has said it is willing to provide humanitarian emergency aid to earthquake-struck Turkey and Syria.

China expressed condolences and concern for the loss of life and property, and is in communications with both Turkey and Syria, a spokesperson from China International Development Cooperation Agency said.
