US storm kills 34, leaves hundreds of thousands without power

A brutal winter storm has killed at least 34 people across the United States. The storm is expected to claim more lives after trapping some motorists inside their cars and knocking out power to several hundred thousand homes and businesses.

The “bomb cyclone” storm, one of the most powerful in decades, also forced the cancellation of more than 3,000 US flights.

Much of the loss of life has centred in and around the city of Buffalo in New York.

The latest victims included some found in cars and some in snow banks, Poloncarz said, adding that the death tally might rise further, said Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz.

“This is not the Christmas any of us hoped for nor expected,” he said on Twitter. “My deepest condolences to the families who have lost loved ones.”
