WHO hopes COVID-19 crisis can be over in less than two years

The World Health Organization hopes the coronavirus crisis can be over in less than two years, its chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said on Friday.

The Spanish flu that hit in 1918 took two years to end, he said, adding: “Our situation now with more technology, of course with more connectedness, the virus has a better chance of spreading, it can move fast.”

“At the same time we have the technology and knowledge to stop it,” UN’s health agency chief further said.

More than 22.8 million people have been diagnosed with COVID-19 around the world, and more than 14.6 million have recovered. More than 797,000 people have died, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
