Assam flood: 36 lakh hit in 26 districts, toll touches 85

The flood situation in Assam worsened further in the past 24 hours even as with seven new cases of death, the flood-induced fatality touched 85 on Wednesday.

Overall 3,376 villages under 93 revenue circles in 26 districts are reeling under floods.

Barpeta continues to be the worst-hit district where 5,29,879 people in 434 villages have been affected.

According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the floods have affected around 36 lakh people in 26 districts.

36,320 people are taking shelter in 629 relief camps across the State, the ASDMA said.

The flood situation is likely to deteriorate further with the meteorological department predicting heavy rainfall in the next 72 hours in various parts of Assam, ASDMA warns.

Flooding has also affected Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve (KNPTR), the biggest habitat of one-horned rhinos in the world. Around 90% area of the park spread over 430 sq km is now submerged under flood waters.
