Opposition leaders on Sunday posted a video on social media reiterating their demands that they have raised in the Parliament since the session began on July 19.
The opposition’s strategy of speaking on the Pegasus row and farmers’ protest during discussions of bills in the Rajya Sabha has now been compiled in a three-minute video which was released with just a week’s proceedings left in the Monsoon Session of the Parliament.
Leader of Opposition, Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge shared the video, accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party-led union government of not listening to the Opposition or answering important questions in Parliament.
“PM @narendramodi seems to have lost his nerves. Why is he not keen on answering questions in Parliament? The opposition parties are ready for discussions in Parliament, but @BJP4India govt is stalling the proceedings so that the truth doesn’t get to the people,” Kharge said in a tweet posting the video.
The video featured clips of speeches in Parliament from leaders of 10 Opposition parties.
“You are not allowing the discussion we have been asking for the past 14 days and the discussions we can do later. You are passing that bill now. If you have courage, begin the discussions on Pegasus now,” Kharge is heard saying in the video on the floor of the House.
“Mr [Narendra] Modi, come listen to us,” TMC’s O’Brien tweeted.
Vandana Chavan of the Nationalist Congress Party and Manoj Jha of the Rashtriya Janata Dal also demanded for discussion on the spyware in the video.
Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam MP RS Bharathi demanded a discussion on the “quality of democracy” in the House, while Trinamool Congress’ Sukhendu Shekhar Roy alleged that there was no freedom of expression in the Parliament.
The CPI(M) accused the government of “stealing” parliamentary democracy, while Congress’s Deepinder Hooda raised the issue of farmers stating that he would talk about the matter if his “microphone is not switched off.”
Leaders of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi, Aam Aadmi Party and Shiv Sena were also heard delivering speeches in the video.
The Monsoon Session of Parliament has seen several disruptions over the past few weeks as the government and the Opposition have reached an impasse over discussion into allegations that the Pegasus spyware was used to spy on several politicians, journalists and activists in India. The Opposition has also held meetings and joint press briefings to put pressure on the Narendra Modi government. Among the other matters, politicians in the Opposition also want discussions on the farm law protests and the rise in fuel prices.
