The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the Uttarakhand government to file a status report on the Haridwar anti-Muslim hate speech delivered at the ‘Dharam Sansad’ in December last year.
An Interlocutory Application was moved in the court in view of the Dharam Sansad scheduled to take place on April 17. Senior Adv Kapil Sibal appeared in court for the petitioners, reports Bar and Bench.
The court also observed that “the applicant is free to alert the concerned authority.“
The IA filed is linked with the petition filed by Journalist Qurban Ali and former Patna High Court judge and senior advocate Anjana Prakash.
The Supreme Court had issued a notice to the Uttarakhand government in response to the petition seeking an independent inquiry into the anti-Muslim hate speech at the ‘Dharam Sansad’ in Haridwar.
The petition stated that the speeches “pose a grave threat not just to the unity and integrity of our country but also endanger the lives of millions of Muslim citizens.”
Several Hindu priests were caught on record giving genocidal calls against Muslims during the day event attended by dozens of people. Several lawmakers from BJP are also associated with the events.
Open calls for the killing of Muslims to establish a Hindu Rashtra were made at the events.
Speakers also targeted former prime minister Manmohan Singh and invoked Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin, Nathuram Godse.
Yati Narsinghanand who organised the event in Haridwar called for a “war against Muslims” and urged “Hindus to take up weapons” is facing several FIRs in UP and Delhi.
Haridwar police had filed an FIR against five of the speakers on charges of promoting enmity between groups and outraging religious sentiments, following widespread criticism outrage.
