Shrikant Tyagi, BJP leader who abused Noida woman, arrested by Uttar Pradesh Police

The Uttar Pradesh Police on Tuesday arrested Shrikant Tyagi, who claims to be a Bharatiya Janata Party leader, days after he abused and assaulted a woman at a residential complex in Noida.

Tyagi was held in Meerut along with three of his associates, the police said. Earlier on Tuesday, the police had detained Tyagi’s wife for questioning, according to PTI.

Tyagi was on the run since Friday when the FIR against him was registered for assaulting the woman.

Sections of criminal trespass, causing hurt, insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace, and criminal intimidation were also added. On Sunday night, Noida police commissioner Alok Singh said that the Gangster Act would also be slapped on him.

Tyagi identifies himself as a national executive member of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Kisan Morcha and national coordinator of the Yuva Kisan Samiti of BJP, according to PTI. However, the BJP has denied having any links with him.

Many videos showed him abusing the woman last week as she tried to stop him from planting trees in the society’s common area, citing violation of rules. Tyagi could be seen pushing the woman and verbally abusing the woman’s husband too.

On Monday, authorities used bulldozers to demolish allegedly illegal portions of a ground-floor apartment in Noida that belongs to Tyagi.

On Monday, Tyagi’s lawyer had filed a surrender petition in the Surajpur Court. The petition was to be heard on Wednesday.
