At least eleven people died and four others became critically ill on Sunday after inhaling poisonous gas at Giaspura in Punjab‘s Ludhiana district. The source of the gas leak and the type of gas were still unclear, according to officials.

Some officials suggest that gas may have spread from manholes. A source has told The Indian Express that a gas leak was reported from the area a year ago as well but no one was adversely affected.

The locality is a densely populated area. Of the eleven dead, six were males, five were females, with two children. Five of them were from one family.

The Ludhiana police have registered a case under section 304 of IPC at Sahnewal police station against unknown persons.

The FIR suspects that some unknown persons dumped industrial waste illegally into the sewage which led to a chemical reaction and toxic gas was produced leading to deaths.
