2 labourers die in Mumbai after falling into manhole, four arrested for not providing safety gear

Two contract labourers died after falling into a manhole of an underground drain while carrying out cleaning work at Shivaji Nagar, Mumbai, on Saturday.

The BMC officials said that the channel had been overflowing following the heavy rain, which lashed large parts of the city on Saturday.

After the bodies were recovered, they were taken to Rajawadi Hospital, where they were pronounced ‘brought dead’.

The deceased have been identified as Ramkrishna (25) and Sudhir Das (30).

BMC officials said that the two contract labourers had been engaged by Gyan Construction Company, which is building a 600mm-diameter sewer line. The firm has not handed over the sewer line to the BMC so far.

The Mumbai Police on Sunday arrested the contractor and three others for not providing any adequate safety gear to the two men at the time of performing their duties.

On the complaint of Ramkrishna’s father, Niranjan, the officials from Shivaji Nagar police station registered a case under sections 304 (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code against the contractor Asjad Ahmad Arshad Siddiqui, in-charge Krishna Rudaji Purohit, supervisor Pramod Mishra and Ashwin Dalaram Chaudhary.
