Comedian Munawar Faruqui sent to judicial custody for remarks on Hindu gods, Amit Shah

Mumbai based stand-up comedian, Munawar Faruqui from Gurajat, was arrested on Saturday for remarks made against Hindu deities and Union Home Minister Amit Shah during a show at Indore in Madhya Pradesh. Faruqui and four others were arrested after the son of a BJP MLA filed a complaint.

The Muslim comedian was allegedly trashed by the workers of Hind Rakshak during the ruckus in the cafe.

The other arrested persons were identified as Edwin Anthony, Prakhar Vyas, Priyam Vyas and Nalin Yadav.

Videos of Faruqui trashed by locals in the presence of police have surfaced social media. The Comedian has been a target of right-wing groups since last year when one of his show got viral for its sharp comments.

Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Aman Singh Bhuria refused to grant bail to Faruqui and other four and remanded them in judicial custody till January 13.

According to Live Law, all of them were booked under IPC sections 295-A (outraging religious feelings), 269 (unlawful or negligent act likely to spread the infection of any disease dangerous to life) and other relevant provisions.

The comedy show was held at a cafe in 56 Dukan area of Indore on Friday, police said.

Eklavya Singh Gaur (36), son of local BJP MLA Malini Laxman Singh Gaur, filed a complaint after he attended the comedian’s gig.
