Coronavirus: India cases rise to 7.5 million, global tally at 40 million

India on Sunday registered a spike of 55,511 cases, taking the total count of coronavirus cases to 7,548,238 , and the country’s death toll reached 114,642.

On Sunday, India reported 590 deaths, the first time in 90 days that the daily death toll had fallen below 600.

Reported active COVID-19 cases in India now stand at 7,72,055. As many as 66,63,608 COVID-19 patients have been cured and discharged so far, the Union Health Ministry has said in its latest update.

India is the second country after the US to reach the grim milestone.

A total of 9,50,83,976 samples were tested for COVID-19 up to 18th October. Of these, 8,59,786 samples were tested yesterday, said the Indian Council of Medical Research.

Global COVID-19 tally has crossed the 40 million mark, according to a tally maintained by Reuters. Global infections, caused by the coronavirus, currently stand at 4,00,43,796, according to the tracker. This figure includes 1.1 million deaths.
