FIR against TMC MP Mahua Moitra for hurting religious sentiments

An FIR has been registered against Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra in Bhopal for her remarks on the controversy over Leena Manimekalai’s film poster showing a woman dressed as Goddess Kali smoking a cigarette.

An FIR has been registered against Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra in Bhopal for her remarks on the controversy over Leena Manimekalai’s film poster showing a woman dressed as Goddess Kali smoking a cigarette.

The case has been registered under section 295A of the IPC for hurting religious sentiments.

Moitra made the remarks while responding to a question on the controversy over the film poster. The poster for the documentary “KAALI” by Manimekalai has sparked a hate campaign against the filmmaker on social media by Hindutva handles over the way it shows Goddess Kali. The Uttar Pradesh Police and Delhi Police on Tuesday registered FIRs against the filmmaker for the “disrespectful depiction of Hindu Gods” in her movie ‘KAALI’.

The TMC on Tuesday had condemned the remarks made by Moitra. The party distanced itself from Moitra’s remarks and said they were made by the MP in “her personal capacity” and were “not endorsed by the party”.

The party tweeted, “The comments made by @MahuaMoitra at the #IndiaTodayConclaveEast2022 and her views expressed on Goddess Kali have been made in her personal capacity and are NOT ENDORSED BY THE PARTY in ANY MANNER OR FORM. All India Trinamool Congress strongly condemns such comments.”

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan slammed Moitra for her remarks and said that insult of Hindu deities will not be tolerated. “Hindu religious sentiments have been hurt by Mahua Moitra’s statement. Insult of Hindu deities will not be tolerated at any cost,” he said.
