The Ministry of Minority Affairs has found at least 830 minority institutions registered with the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) to be fake or non-operational, The Indian Express reported on Sunday. These 830 institutions received scholarships to nearly 144 crores from the Centre in the past five years.
On July 10, the Ministry handed over its findings to the CBI which is now carrying out its own probe, the report said.
An internal investigation involved enquiries in 100 districts across 34 states. Out of the 1572 institutions scrutinised, 830 were found to be involved in fraudulent activities. In Chhattisgarh, all 62 scrutinized institutions were found to be fake or non-operational.
For now, the authorities have ordered the freezing of accounts linked to these 830 institutions.
