Muslim activist Javed Mohammed walks out of jail after 21 months

Muslim activist and community leader Javed Mohammed walked out of jail on Saturday after getting bail in multiple cases against him over 2022 Prayagraj Violence. Mohammed was lodged in Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria Jail.

Welfare Party of India leader and Allahabad-based activist remained in jail for 1 year 9 months and 5 days. In October last year, he was given two days’ permission to attend his daughter, Afreen Fatima’s wedding.

Mohammed was arrested from Prayagraj on June 11, 2022, after accusing him of organizing protests that turned violent against comments made by the then-active Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders insulting Prophet Muhammad and Islam.

The city witnessed a massive protest against Hindutva politicians Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal that turned violent.

According to the family, Mohammad, his wife and one of his daughters were arbitrarily picked up by cops from his home during a midnight raid. despite his history as a peacekeeping activist, Allahabad Police called Javed “one of the masterminds of violence in the city.”

His house was demolished the next day by the civic body. Several right-wing news channels live telecasted the demolition. Rights groups across the world and opposition parties in India widely condemned the arrest and demolition.

On July 16, 2022, the Prayagraj administration invoked the National Security Act (NSA) against Mohammed.

Mohammed is known for his involvement in protests against the Citizen Amendment Act (CAA) and criticism of the BJP and government officials. Police also targeted his daughter and Muslim student activist Afreen Fatima, a staunch critic of Hindu nationalist policies.
