NCERT removes key quotes on Gandhi’s assassination, RSS ban from class 12 textbook

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has recently removed content related to the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. Key quotes which have been deleted from the NCERT class 12 political science textbook had been taught for over 15 years.

These deleted quotes include references to those who wished to take revenge on Hindus or turn India into a Hindu-only country, attempts made by Hindu extremists to assassinate Gandhi, and the effect Gandhi’s death had on communal tensions in the country, leading to the banning of organizations promoting communal hatred like Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS).

In addition, a reference to Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse as “a Brahmin from Pune” and “the editor of an extremist Hindu newspaper who had denounced Gandhiji as ‘an appeaser of Muslims'” was also deleted from a Class 12 History textbook.

According to Indian Express, the deleted parts are:

  1. He (Gandhi) was particularly disliked by those who wanted Hindus to take revenge or who wanted India to become a country for the Hindus, just as Pakistan was for Muslims…
  2. His steadfast pursuit of Hindu-Muslim unity provoked Hindu extremists so much that they made several attempts to assassinate Gandhiji…
  3. Gandhiji’s death had an almost magical effect on the communal situation in the country… The Government of India cracked down on organisations that were spreading communal hatred. Organisations like the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh were banned for some time…

The news comes day after the NCERT has removed numerous sections from the 12th class History book, including parts on Mughals, democracy, and popular movements.
