On-duty cop in Aligarh accidentally shoots woman inside Police Station, victim critical

In a shocking incident, a woman was accidentally shot in the head by a police officer in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh on Friday, 8 December.

The mishap occurred at Kotwali Nagar police station of Aligarh district, Uttar Pradesh. In the CCTV visuals of the station, the woman could be seen standing near the desk of the accused police inspector, identified as Manoj Sharma.  

After a few seconds, one of the colleagues of the inspector handed him a pistol. From what could be seen from the video, the cop misfired as he was cocking the gun. 

Ishrat Nigar, a resident of the city, came to the station around 2:50 PM as she was called for passport verification related enquiry. 

The bullet hit her head straight and she fell crashing on the ground. The video of the same surfaced on the internet and garnered the attention of netizens.

She was taken to the nearby Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College Hospital immediately, and her condition is reportedly critical.

The woman’s family alleged that the official handling her passport verification was pressuring her for money. 

“She had visited the police station for passport inquiry. She was getting calls for money. Don’t know who shot her. Don’t know about the money demanded. There was an argument between them,” said Jeeshan, a relative of the 55-year-old injured woman told Dainik Jagaran.

“Due to negligence, the above Inspector Manoj Sharma has been suspended with immediate effect and a criminal case has been registered against him, the injured woman is being treated by the doctor’s team, the footage of the incident is being investigated by the field unit,” said Kalanidhi Naithani SSP, Aligarh.

Manoj Sharma, the accused police official is absconding.
