Ujjain: Man arrested for teen’s rape, tried to escape from custody

The primary suspect in the rape case involving a 15-year-old girl, whose traumatic experience was documented on CCTV as she desperately sought help by knocking on doors, has been arrested in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. Despite attempting to flee, he was apprehended by a police team.

“Today, we reached the spot to… recover the clothes worn by the girl. Sensing an opportunity, Bharat Soni tried to escape. Police personnel chased and caught him. During this, he fell on a cemented road, injuring his arms and legs,” inspector Ajay Kumar told reporters.

The disturbing images from Ujjain, depicting the 15-year-old girl in a semi-naked and bleeding state after the rape, as she sought help by knocking on doors, have sparked widespread outrage.

The accused has been identified as Bharat Soni, an autorickshaw driver.

The police officer said they had formed a 28-member team and using technical investigation rounded up the accused.

The girl told the police that she roams around the temples in Ujjain and sustains herself by food offered by locals. She said that an unidentified man came towards her and gagged her mouth, choked her, tore her clothes and sexually assaulted her.

Police found the injured girl on Monday morning near an ashram and took her to a local hospital, where she is undergoing treatment and is now said to be out of danger.
