UN urges authorities to protect activist Babloo Loitongbam after threats

On Friday, the United Nations Human Rights office said it was “alarmed” by threats to human rights defender Babloo Loitongbam by extremist Meitei groups Meitei Leepun & Arambai Tengol groups.

In a post on X, UN Human Rights urged Indian authorities to protect Loitongbam “his family & home, & hold perpetrators accountable.” The post by the UN watchdog got a mixed reaction on social media.

Loitongbam’s house came under attack in Imphal last week after he made comments critical of Meitei Leepun and Aarambai Tenggol. The groups are widely blamed for the turmoil in the northeastern state.

Manipur has been marred by ethnic violence between the Meiteis and the Kukis since May 3, killing at least 200 people.
