UP state bus staffer, sacked for stopping bus to let passengers offer namaz dies, by suicide

Mohit Yadav, a 32-year-old conductor of a UP state government transport bus, who along with the driver was suspended for allegedly allowing two Muslim passengers to offer namaz after halting the vehicle for two minutes on 3 June, has died by suicide.

Yadav, who went missing on 27 August, has killed himself by jumping in front of a running train in Mainpuri, Times of India reported. His body was found on the railway tracks near his house the next morning

Yadav was a resident of Nagla Khushali located within the Ghiror police jurisdiction in Mainpuri.

He had been employed as a contractual worker at UPSRTC for a span of more than eight years, receiving a monthly salary of approximately Rs 17,000.

Yadav and the driver, KP Singh, allegedly allowed two Muslim passengers to offer namaz by halting the vehicle for two minutes on the Bareilly-Delhi national highway enroute to Delhi three months ago. They were both suspended with “immediate effect” on 5 June, two days after the incident.

According to the driver, the bus took a pitstop to allow some passengers to use the toilet and when two Muslim passengers expressed their wish to offer ‘namaz,’ he agreed.

“He had no money and was struggling to make ends meet,” TOI quoted Yadav’s friend as saying.

“We used to work together. When he called me up on Sunday night, he had no money to even recharge his phone. He said that despite having filed an appeal there was no hope of getting the job back,” Yadav’s friend said to the newspaper.
