Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday (May 28) inaugurated the new Parliament building after installing a ‘Sengol’ in the Lok Sabha chamber, right next to the Speaker’s chair and performing a puja with Vedic rituals and a multi-faith prayer.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla was also present with along with PM Modi during the inauguration.
Earlier, declaring their intention to boycott the inauguration of the new Parliament, 19 Opposition parties had issued a joint statement saying that there was no value in a new building when the “soul of democracy has been sucked out from the Parliament.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to inaugurate the new Parliament building by himself, “completely sidelining President Droupadi Murmu,” is condemnable, they said.
PM Modi also unveiled a commemorative plaque for the new building.
Thousands of police personnel have been deployed in Lutyens’ Delhi and multiple layers of barricades put in place as part of the robust security arrangement in and around the new Parliament building.
