UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called for human rights to be put “front and centre” of COVID-19 response and recovery globally in order to achieve a better future for people everywhere.

Under the leadership of the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Ugrahan), hundreds of protesting farmers used their platform on international human rights day to demand the release of several rights activists, students, Dalit, Muslim, Bahujan and left leaders booked under the draconian Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.

Out of all states and Union Territories in India, only 9 had recorded the data of transgender prisoners separately from the male/ female binary categorisation, according to a new report by the rights group Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI).

The National Platform for the Rights of the Disabled (NPRD) has expressed its outrage at the continued denial of a sipper and straw to jailed activist Stan Swamy.

This is an egregious and shameful act by the Indian Government, which forces us to cease the crucial human rights work of Amnesty International India for now. However, this does not mark the end of our firm commitment to, and engagement in, the struggle for human rights in India.

In response to the escalating human rights crisis in Belarus, Amnesty International will address the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) on 18 September and demand that it takes strong and decisive action to investigate the ongoing repression of post-election protests in the country and hold perpetrators of mass violations to account.
