Egypt’s Suez Canal Authority chief said Saturday that strong wind was not the main reason for the grounding of the MV Ever Given cargo ship in the waterway, reported news agency AFP.

“Strong winds and weather factors were not the main reasons for the ship’s grounding, there may have been technical or human errors,” Osama Rabie said at a press conference in Suez.

The Suez Canal, which handles about 10 percent of international maritime trade, was blocked by container ship, causing a traffic jam.

On average, 50 vessels pass through the Suez Canal every day.

On Tuesday, a large 200,000-tonne container ship heading to Rotterdam ran aground in the Canal. The 400-metre long container ship Ever Given’s hull became wedged length-ways across the canal lane, causing a gridlock of at least 100 vessels.
