Owaisi against Jamia student’s arrest, says Muslims at receiving end of UAPA

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Tuesday blamed BJP Government for charging the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA)  against student activists and anti-Citizenship Amendment (CAA) Protesters, saying that the government targets Muslims.

Speaking about the arrest of Safoora Zargar, a student leader from Jamia Millia Islamia who was charged under the UAPA in Delhi violence case, Owaisi asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah whether “the UAPA is only for anybody who is against the government.”

“In Delhi, a student from Jamia Millia was arrested who was four months pregnant, another girl was also arrested for raising their voice against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Registration of Citizens (NRC), they were charged under UAPA,”  he said in a video brief.

Owaisi said that he has always opposed UAPA when it was being drafted and presented in the parliament.

“I ask Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shat that is the UAPA only for Muslims, Dalits, Adivasis or anybody who is against the government. And people who state ‘ Desh Ke Gaddaro Ko’ these people are not even arrested leave about charging UAPA act,” said Owaisi.

Owaisi said the sections 16 and 18 are driven from the draconian POTA and it says that the person was involved in terrorist activities.

“Bail is impossible here. The accused is guilty until proven innocent in the court,” he added.

“Is protesting against CAA, NPR and NRC a terrorist activity?” Owaisi asked.

Owaisi quoted FIR filed by the Delhi police against Safoora Zargar which says they were involved in a premeditated conspiracy.

AIMIM chief also asks what conspiracy was it and the actual conspirators who called for the violence and killed people are roaming free.

“It was a pogrom and Muslims were at its receiving end. Those Sangh Parivar leaders who incited the Delhi pogrom remain comfortably outside the jail,” Hyderabad MP said.

He also criticized the use of sedition law against Delhi Minorities Commission Chairman Zafarul Islam Khan, while Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has remained silent.
