South Africa virus infections pass 200,000

South Africa, one of Africa’s largest economies passed the grim milestone of 200,000 known novel coronavirus infections on Monday, after adding more than 8,000 new cases in one day.

The country is now the worst-affected country on the continent in terms of the number of known coronavirus cases.

There are currently 205,721 cases and 3,310 deaths in the country, according to the Johns Hopkins University tracker.

South Africa recorded its first confirmed Covid-19 case on March 5.

Nearly 11.6 million people around the world have now been diagnosed with COVID-19, and nearly 537,000 have died, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

The United States and Brazil have reported the most cases and the highest death tolls.
