Puducherry Congress govt reduced to minority as another MLA quits before floor test

One more Congress MLA has resigned in Puducherry a day before a test of strength after the ruling party no longer has a majority.

Raj Bhavan Constituency Congress MLA Lakshmi Narayanan resigned on Sunday bringing the alliance’s number down to 13.

He said he will leave the party too.

Last week, five MLAs had also tendered their resignation. With one more MLA adding to the growing number of resignations, the Puducherry government is headed towards a big crisis.

With the latest exit, the Congress’s strength in the Puducherry legislative assembly has fallen to 13 out of a total 27.

The Opposition has 14 MLAs in the house.

Four-time Congress MLA Lakshminarayanan said he will make the next move after consulting his supporters.

Sources say Lakshminarayanan is likely to join the NR Congress of N Rangasamy, which has tied up with the BJP for the polls.
