Professor of Modern Indian History in Jamia Millia Islamia, Rizwan Qaiser, died on Saturday, days after he was admitted to a Delhi hospital following the coronavirus infection.
Qaiser who had been teaching History since 1989 at the Department of History and Culture in the Jamia Millia Islamia, wrote books on Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad and Indian National Congress.
His important works include Resisting Colonialism and Communal Politics: Maulana Azad and Making of the Indian
Nation and Congress and Making of the Indian Nation.
An alumnus of the Jawaharlal Nehru University, Qaiser has served as the Honorary Director, Centre for the Study of Comparative Religions and Civilizations and the Head, Department of History and Culture in Jamia Millia Islamia.
He also wrote hundreds of articles and presented a good number of academic papers on the subjects including History of Communalism in Colonial India; Gandhian Politics; History of the Indian National Movement; Muslim identities in Colonial India; Politics of language in colonial and post-colonial India.
The funeral prayer of Rizwan Qaiser will take place in Batla House Mosque on Sunday.
In his condolence message, historian S Irfan Habib said: “Extremely shocked to hear that dear friend and historian Rizwan Qaiser of Jamia has succumbed to Covid. Has left behind so many memories, still can’t believe that Rizwan is no more. Rest in peace dear friend.”
Qaiser’s death has left the academic fraternity in shock.
Many academics and students took to social media to express their condolences for their “dear colleague” and “beloved teacher.”
