Ex ABVP national president arrested for harassing 60-year-old woman in Chennai

Former Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) national president Dr Subbiah Shanmugam has been arrested by the Chennai police for harassing a 60-year-old woman neighbour by urinating near the entrance of her home and throwing rubbish outside her house.

The alleged incident took place in July 2020, according to The News Minute.

The saffron politician was also the head of the Department of Surgical Oncology in Kilpauk Medical College. He was suspended from service a few weeks ago, said police.

Adambakkam Police filed a First Information Report (FIR) nearly two weeks after receiving the complaint from the 60-year-old victim and her family.

Later, the woman withdrew the complaint allegedly due to external pressure. However, the police continued the investigation as an FIR has been filed.

“The arrest was following the suspension and the FIR against him,” Indian Express quoted a police officer as saying.

He was booked under section 271 (disobedience to quarantine rule) and section 427 (mischief causing damage) of the Indian Penal Code and under the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Women Harassment Act.

In July 2020, the victim, a widow had said she had been facing constant harassment from Subbiah, former national president of RSS affiliated organisation, as she found garbage dumped outside the entrance. CCTV footage captured Subbiah urinating outside the victim’s door.

The problems started when Subbiah approached the woman for permission to use one of her two parking lots.

“He was outraged when she demanded rent for it. The complaint said he first broke a signboard at the parking lot. After that, several actions continued, including calls asking the woman whether she needed chicken, knowing well that she is a vegetarian. Urinates in front of the door, throwing used surgical masks, garbage and muck on the doorstep were other complaints,” said the cop.

The victim’s family have been alleging that police were reluctant to take action in the case because of the doctor’s political ties.

National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) has demanded action against the former ABVP leader while ABVP had even issued a statement claiming that its former chief is innocent.
