Rajasthan governor hosts ‘Ram Katha’ by former RSS pracharak at Raj Bhavan

Many have raised objections to Rajasthan Governor Kalraj Mishra’s decision to organise a “Ram Katha” program at the Raj Bhavan presided over by a former Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) pracharak.

A five-day day Ram Katha by Vijay Kaushal Maharaj has begun at Raj Bhawan on 27 August.

Every day of the program, a katha vachak (narrator of holy text) named Vijay Kaushal will read the Ram Katha daily from 4 pm to 7 pm. Kaushal was from Vrindavan in Uttar Pradesh and was an RSS pracharak earlier, according to Indian Express.

Among the attendees on the first day were the BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP Ghanshyam Tiwari and BJP MP from Jaipur Ramcharan Bohra, the newspaper reported.

Before the start of the event on Saturday, Rajasthan Governor Kalraj Mishra conducted a puja of the Hindu deity Ram and the Ramcharitmanas.

People’s Union for Civil Liberties National Secretary and Rajasthan President Kavita Srivastava said in a statement that the program goes “against the dignity of his (Mishra’s) constitutional post to organise a religious ceremony in the Raj Bhavan.”

It appealed to the governor to shift the programme outside the Raj Bhawan by upholding the dignity of the post he is holding and also in tune with the constitutional scheme of things.

The Congress-led state government has not yet commented on the matter, PUCL claimed that the Congress government’s Directorate of Information and Broadcasting was promoting the event.  It said that the invitation for the function sent by WhatApp messages carry the official seal and press releases were being issued by the information and public relations department.
