Bahujan-Samaj Party chief and country’s tallest Dalit politician, Mayawati, designated nephew Akash Anand as successor to lead BSP on Sunday.
As reported by ANI, BSP leader Udayveer Singh said, “BSP chief Mayawati has announced Akash Anand (Mayawati’s nephew) as her successor.”
Akash Anand has been given the responsibility to strengthen the BSP’s organisation all over the country except Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, Singh was quoted by PTI as saying
Mayawati made the announcement at a key party meet today which was attended by the party office bearers.
Akash Anand, a prominent face during BSP’s Lok Sabha election campaign in 2019, is the national coordinator of the party.
Mayawati had appointed her brother Anand Kumar national vice president of the party in 2019 and nephew Akash was made a national coordinator.
In 2019, Akash Anand addressed his first political rally, encouraging people to support the Samajwadi Party-BSP-Rashtriya Lok Dal alliance, when the Election Commission imposed a 48-hour campaign ban on Mayawati.
Akash Anand, an MBA graduate from London, entered politics in 2017 at a young age of 22.
Meanwhile, Lok Sabha MP Danish Ali, who recently became a target of Islamophobic abuse on the floor of the house, was suspended from the BSP. Ali was suspended after he walked out of Lok Sabha proceedings on Friday along with other opposition members to protest against the motion to expel Trinamool Congress’ Mahua Moitra for “unethical conduct.”
