Babri verdict is yet another assault on India’s 200m Muslims: Indian American Muslim Council

The Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC), an advocacy group in the United States expressed its dismay over the acquittal of the leaders of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the Bharatiya Janata Party in the case of the demolition of the Babri mosque in 1992.

“Indian Americans and all people of conscience feel let down by the CBI court. The acquittal of RSS and BJP leaders suggests that under the current dispensation, the majority and the mobs have the right of way,” said Ahsan Khan, president of the Indian American Muslim Council.

Nearly three decades after the Babri Masjid was razed by Sangh Parivar mob in Uttar Pradesh, all accused including former deputy Prime Minister LK Advani in the Babri Masjid demolition case acquitted by the Special CBI court on Wednesday.

Reading out the 2,000-page order, Judge Judge SK Yadav observed that evidences against the accused are not strong enough and the Babri Mosque demolition incident was not pre-planned.

Khan claimed that this grave injustice is yet another assault on India’s 200 million Muslims.

IAMC has expressed its shock at the way justice was delayed and denied in the demolition of the historic mosque, done in full view of the national and international audiences and television and print journalists.

On December 6, 1992, thousands of Hindu nationalist mobs tore down the Babri Masjid in the northern town of Ayodhya, in the state of Uttar Pradesh (UP). The demolition of the 16th-century Babri Masjid, which was constructed under the rule of the first Mughal Emperor Babar, triggered anti-Muslim pogroms across India, resulting in the death of over 2000 mulsims. Riots and clashes ensued across cities like Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Bhopal and several others. The riots in Mumbai alone, largely organised by the Shiv Sena, caused 900 deaths and 9,000 crores worth of property damage.

IAMC said that while acquitting the RSS and BJP leaders, the CBI court has not only ignored the Supreme Court orders, but also the findings of the Liberhan Commission which was set up by the government of India in 1992 to probe the demolition of the mosque.

The Liberhan Commission had concluded that the demolition of the Babri mosque was meticulously planned. The Commission had said the mobilization of the cadres of RSS, Bajrang Dal, BJP and Shiv Sena in Ayodhya was neither “spontaneous or voluntary” but “orchestrated and planned.”

Mohammed Jawad, who is the general secretary of the IAMC condemned the CBI which reports to the Narendra Modi government for “deliberately botching up the investigation” during the investigation stage.

“It seems India’s federal investigating agency wanted to ensure that the accused from the RSS and BJP, go scot free,” Jawad said.
